In Matthew chapters 5-9, the Gospel writer (who makes his own debut in 9:9ff) puts the authority of Jesus on display. He shows us that Jesus has authority in His Teaching (Sermon on the Mount); authority over nature (calming of the storm); over sin, sickness, demons, and death (healing of the paralytic, raising of Jairus' daughter).
But does Jesus have authority over YOU?
The simple answer might be: "yes." But we don't want to be unthoughtful in our response to this question. Because this is THE question we have to ask ourselves.
For a more thoughtful approach - we look to the Centurion who encountered Jesus in Matthew chapter 8. What might this "authority" have to show us about how we might respond to Jesus, and how Jesus uses His authority?
